BALEARIC ISLANDS
Mention the word ‘Balearics’ to those who have travelled
there and expect a volley of replies, for the colourful islands
of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Formentera and Cabrera are full of
just about everything, and they appeal to different people in very
different ways.
For example, if you plan a holiday steeped in history and culture,
you’ll be charmed by Palma’s medieval cobbled streets
and peaceful courtyards, and the 14th century castle on the natural
park island of Isla de Cabrera. If, on the other hand, you’re
a sun-loving ‘beach’ person, you can plan your cruise
to wash up on the shores of Cala Salada, Cala Binirras, Cala Fornells,
the island of Es Palmador, Cala Saona (which is the best beach in
Formentera), or you can even dare to bare on Es Trenc – one
of Mallorca’s best and
longest beaches.
However, if it’s local colour and traditional character you’re
after, you can happily steer away from the crowds and find quaint
and traditional island villages the likes of Soller, Pollensa, Porto
Colom, or Val de Mossa, Mallorca, where Chopin lived when he was
exiled. But for many people, the Balearics is a place to see and
be seen, whether in the exclusive restaurant at Andraitx, the lively
bars and pubs of Mahon, in Palma’s top boutiques, or in the
ancient town of Ibiza, which has it all – charming flower-decked
balconies leaning over cobbled streets by day, and bohemian nightclubs
and bars beating through the night. Whatever your pleasure, the
Balearics will oblige!
